My gym shoes smell, terribly. Can't I just throw them in the washing macine?

Lots of contradictory things I've read on the internet. Baught a pair of rebocks over the summer and they smell, I guess they have some kind of leather on them.

Is it bad for leather to get wet?

Is it safe to throw them in the washing machine by themselves?

What about the laces and insoles?

what about muffeling the noise?

How long do they take to air dry?

Any advice would be greately appreciated, especially if you've experimented with this yourself.

oh, also, I have this neopreene knee brace, starting to smell bad too. what's the best way to clean/remove odor from it. I've heard stuff about vinegar but....iono about it

leather will shrink in the wash, and the shoes will never fit the same again if you do put them in a washing machine, even if they're not leather.

You'd have to make sure they were completely dry before wearing them again (which could take a WEEK with all the padding in the shoe) or they'd smell even worse when you wore them again.
Reply:Spray them with disinfection spray like lyso then spray them with Febrez let them dry. Let them air out after each wear and wear clean socks everytime you wear them.
Reply:Leather is washable and putting them in the washing machine is a great idea. Remove the insoles (put them in separately) and wash with an old blanket to muffle the noise. DO NOT put them in the dryer, pull the tongue out as far as possible and if you can set them somewhere that there is air flow. They will dry overnite. Spray with water repellent when done.
Reply:I have a pair of asics and I have thrown them into the washing machine before. It really works and they come out pretty good too. Depending on how dirty they are...mine were pretty dirty. They are a mix of leather and cotton or whatever they normally make shoes out of. I also threw them in the dryer and they were just fine as well. You can throw a towel or other item in there if you're really worried about the noise. Plus it would help keep them moving around in the dryer.

I don't know about the knee brace. I'm sorry.
Reply:Wash them in the washer with bleach. Don't put them in the dryer. Sit them outside in the sun and let them dry. My girlfriend washes mine all the time.
Reply:yes, i wash my son's wrestling shoes, and they really stink, just add about a half a cup of ammonia.

ammonia will kill the smell. good luck.
Reply:air shoe outside
Reply:i'm pretty sure it is okay. But I think the shoe gets a little messed up
Reply:cold water low amount of detergent and your good to go.
Reply:You can throw the neoprene brace in the cold water gentle cycle of your washer.

As for the gym shoes... Washing them may make them look good, but it screws up their ability to cushion and protect your feet and ankles. Best thing to do is wash the insoles and laces in the cold, gentle cycle of your washing machine. Spray the inside of the shoe wth Febreez or the kind of enyzme spray used to remove pet odors. Clean the outside of the shoe with a 409 types spray cleaner and a brush and rag. Replace the insoles and laces when they're dry.
Reply:JUST GO OUT AND BUT A NEW PAIR AND THE NEOPREENE KNEE BRACE TOO PLS _THATS NASTY
Reply:Wash them with a load of towels and then dry in front of the refrigerato(where the warm air comes out of the vent) overnight
Reply:If your issue is the smell, why not just spray them with Febreeze? It really does get nasty smells out. I know.
