How do you tell if your running/training shoes are defective?

I heard an old urban legend that said you could tell the number of manufacturing defects in a pair of athletic shoes by removing the foam insole and counting the number of slits carved into the front of the insole. Is there any truth to that? Any other ways to tell other than coming up lame or injured from a poorly made shoe after it's too late?

Thanks

If you tear up your shoes, you're going to damage them anyway. Most shoes are well-made and able to handle the abuse of running.

If you stick with a good manufacturer, Newbalance or Nike, you should have no problems.
